Reflections of our day, in fair judgement where we lay our scene, for as one we rise, as one we fall. As time flies so will the experiences pour.

Another year has passed, with the tales of time and truth of labor emerging from the pits of our honor. Breaths taken and huffs drawn, thoughts captured and griefs mourn; as will time test our fate, so will we experience.

Everything has a beginning: the sweetest of fruits were once dull flowers, the tallest of trees were once seeds, the might of man was once the desires of our precursors. Such as these were the beginnings of a lifetime bondage, the class which we belong. The greatest of a people body were once shy individuals, different in each way. Differences as repellant as a magnet were soon to be neutralized and new associations of our time were soon to be born.

Sweat toiled and blood boiled, teamwork, one for a day so full. Last year, the class of 2B raised $1400 for the goodwill of the Victoria Edge Fund.

This year has been both sweet and sour in many ways. Good things have come to us, witnesses of true glory, honor and respect, the great barrier of not sticking as one crumble, the true fruits born from hard labor, the pride we have asserted around those who love us dear. Unfortunate things have also befallen, the departure of many great mentors, friends and guides, of whom I shall not mention because of the limits of our humility; and even times where we thought we couldn’t, when of true fact that was, we could. A dying friendship and spirit, overcome because a friendship could never be dead, as it was said, To himself every man is immortal; he may know that he is going to die, but he can never know he is dead.

This year would also not have been such of a note without the support and endeavors of our dear teachers, all of whom we might have taken granted for. I believe that they are truly ‘teachers’ in their own ways, strict or lenient, mean or kind, resourceful or creative; as a teacher has never really taught until the student has learned.

Right now as I speak, new planets and stellar systems have been discovered, new mountains scaled, new bridges built and new friendships formed. As will these continue, so will the bounds of our bonds be strengthened, that for we were one yesterday, so shall be today, same will be of tomorrow, until death take us away, and life bring us part.

That we might remember so dear, the morales, lessons and thoughts we gathered individually, whether good or bad; friendships forged and nemesis forgotten, good times passed and bad times forsaken, that this word, Memory, shall live up to its name, and serve us a good purpose in collecting the dust we leave behind.

It will be of this moment that we will officially separate, emotionally, physically and mentally, that we each have dreams to fulfill at our own pace, places of higher levels we have to reach. To all those who shall be going off as one together, I wish you good acquaintances; to all those who shall walk independently, I wish you good strength. Still be, the power of dreams shall connect us, each and one, all and all.

That time is, indeed like a friend and an enemy, a strength, then a weakness. While we live in the realms of time, time rules the limits we might have tried to overcome once, and that time judges the finite pleasures we have so dearly sought. Time has bounded us for two good years, as it will now, separate us physically, for eternity in the worst cases.

The power of dreams shall still connect us, though not physically, whether we will meet again someday, someway; or whether we exist in the deepest thoughts and dreams of one another - connected in every single way, and that no person, spirit, realm or time can pilfer from the depths of our heart. Destiny and fate within shall deem.

Down the road might we question the purpose of our separation, why destiny made us to be so.

That as we have always pronounced in every way close to our hearts, Once a Victorian, Always a Victorian, shall we also proclaim the everlastingness of our friendship and the infinite heights and depths of its spirit.

This day, physically apart as we are in every right of the realms of our own existence, spirit be together, as one, to infinity, and beyond.

I just returned from Ice Skating at Kallang Leisure Park. It is a nice place altogether, cool and slippery. Perhaps we could do that sometime? Besides, there were so many student groups there 'chilling' out like what we do. The admission fee is just $13.00 add rentals and stuff, later, for 2 hours. If they can why not we? It will be fun besides all the blisters you get if you don't wear high socks. Take note, Chia!

Anyway Zhi Yuan has gone on his knees to beg me to tell you that he has cordially invited all to his helicopter-house to do some ball kicking. I mean he suggested street soccer: what do you think? A movie then street soccer? That would be... 'fun'...

Dwayne (Kheng Jing, in case you did not know) says that we should do something special for the last time: we might not have any more chances to next year. Indeed, the IP people are going to be kept busy and Secondary 3 CCAs are going to be all important with leadership positions, roles and general attendance expectations so the chances of us even seeing or hearing each other is low (unless of course you remain in VS or return to VS for fun) A couple of Red Shirts from our class right?

The thing I worry about now if the response! Would you want to do it again and again?

Holidays are here and like almost all of us are/have leaving/left the country in one way or another. Hope you have great fun!

Before I start off, I would like to congratulate and thank Justin and everyone else involved for making the gathering a success already.

Since Gerald has suggested this to me, I would like to bring this subject up. I would like to ask the class if you would want to book a futsal court for us to play soccer. It costs around $50 an hour and we need to book it so I hope you all can respond to this ASAP. Just post your views on the tagboard.

I understand that some of you have CCAs during the Pre-Activities. Well, as long as you are not missing out on the BBQ right?

I hope that the food we are planning to order is 'to your standards'. The total cost no matter how it might seem is more than a hundred. That is why it is crucial to expend the money from you. Bring your $5!

We will be watching Quantum of Solace and Bowling at Kallang Leisure Park, so bring some cash. We are still debating over where to play soccer. It is dang expensive at the Cage.

Hope that all of you have achieved what you wanted for the exams, and moved on to the classes you have dreamed of going to.

Well some of us will be going to the IP and some to ~~London~~ Anderson. Still, we will be 2B; till death do us part. Forever, you know, the common layman. Now it is time to cherish each other for the last time, even until death do us part.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

CLASS GATHERING, NOVEMBER 7, EAST COAST PARK

Yes we will be having a class gathering this coming Friday and will be expecting a huge turnout. Please remember to bring $5 for the BBQ expenses.

If you want to start coming to East Coast Park don't come so early. The organizers and most (some) of us will only arrive there at about 4 P.M., so come about 4.45 P.M., to be safe. Come any earlier and be prepared to find no one. (Unless all of you go early and wait there like silly goons) Why 4 P.M.? We will be somewhere else... (INVITE ONLY)

If you are unable to make it for the day, go at night, around 7 P.M., would be nice! Its near school after all - food will still be available. You'll just miss the day activities... If you only can make it at 9pm, come earlier.

Yup, exams are finally over. We can now let our hair down and take a break from all the mugging we have done. Now is time to keep our fingers cross and hope we do well for the exams. It has been the Teacher's Day celebration for Mr. Ron Tan (and mine and Calvin's) last Friday. What a bang! There were 2 cakes - a blackforest and champagne flavored splendor. Sorry folks, no cake smashing. Mr. Ron Tan must have been pleased. Keep the class spirit going!

That was Friday.

Today marks the start that all of us are able to catch some rest, sleep a little later and possibly catch up on school work.

It is Sunday.

Many of us will be going overseas, that is cool. Some of us will be staying at home to play Runescape (hey, 2B has an account), or hack Maple Story servers (Yes, Si Hui), or wow me in WoW. Whatever you do, enjoy!

And don't forget to revise the past years assignments and work - the final years papers are coming in just 3 weeks after this vacation. Term 4 only has 5 weeks. That is short.

This includes IP students. DO NOT START TO SLACK.

Chee Yang posting here. Decided to talk about some upcoming events

The CA2 exams are finally over. Hope everyone managed to do up to their expectations. If you have, keep it up. If you havent, then work harder next year. However, I guess we still have a lot of important test and dealines coming up so I urge everone to still hang on with a focus state of mind.

We have our EL oral coming up. Some have completed them but for those who havent. Would like to wish you good luck. I suppose Mrs Rama would be partially responsible if the class were to do badly as she had decided to push all this to the last minute. Also, she only explained what picture discussion was after we selected our pictures. So, I hope everone would be able to score well for this exams. Here are some tips from what I recall. Hopefully they will help.

Oral

Read confidently, remember to pronounce your words clearly.
Try to read ahead of where you are reciting so that you will be prepared if there are any difficult words ahead.
Do not point at the words you are reading. It can be a bit distracting for you and the teacher.
Posture is important. Remember to sit up straight so that you can project your voice more effectively.
Remember to pause appropriately when there is a full stop or a comma. Take frequent breaths so you do not get breathless while reading.

Picture discussion

Read in an appropriate sequence. Either from the background to the foregound or from left to right depending on your prefences and the picture.
Remember to state your rationale behind why you intepret the picture this way. Do NOT just state your assumptions.
Use descriptive words but do not use emotive words.

OPW and geography project due this week. Hope everyone will be able to meet the respective deadlines. But I suggest that everyone remembers to take note of the quality of their work. It should not be merely cut and paste work.

Hope everyone will have a pleasant week ahead. Dont stress yourselves too much.

Today's Table Tennis Women's Olympics was a spectacular learning point for all of us to view.

Business as usual for China- 3-0; a score which had been seen constantly throughout the whole competition. But it cannot be said that we had lost after all - we managed to catch a falling Slippery Silver from South Korea. It was a close battle.

China is far superior to the Singapore team. Looking at the way the game had been played was simply awesome. The star players, namely Li Jia Wei, Feng Tian Wei and Wang Yue Gu were simply agile and stubbornly defensive.

Congratulations to Singapore for its first Olympic medal, though Silver, in 48 years.

And hopefully Le Yuan or Jun Wei (2A) might be on the telly in a few years.

LINEAR GRAPHS

Just for your info:

When the gradient (m) is given, and one of the points in which the line touches (x,y) is stated,

and the equation of the line is required, there is this formulae.

m = y - y1/ x - x1

where m = gradient, x1 and y1 being the coordinates of the point in which the line touches and x and y being x and y..

Geddit?

Eg: Find the eqn of the line which touches a point (3,2) and has a gradient of 3

Sub...

3 = y - 2/x - 3

3x - 9 = y - 2

y = 3x - 7

Another eqn.

When two points in which the line touches are given, (x1,y1), (x2,y2) are given, and the equation of the line is required, there is this formulae.

y - y1/x - x1 = y2 - y1/x2 - x1

Where (x1,y1), (x2,y2) are the points, and x and y being x and y...

eg: Fing the eqn of the line which passes through the points (3,2) and (5,8)

sub...

y - 3/x - 2 = 8 - 2/5 - 3

y - 3/x - 2 = 3

y - 3 = 3x - 6

y = 3x + 3

Xuan Jie here. I visited Ms Lim yesterday together with Gerald and Cheeyang and we found that we have lots of thing to take note for our maths CA, especially the graph topic (Chapter 8 & 9). Well, these are the things that Ms Lim want us to take note for our exam:

For graph topic:

1) Please revise all the Math worksheets (Worksheet of linear graphs & curve) that Mr Leung and Mr Tan gave us.

2) Please revise the math workbook, worksheet 18-20.

3) Keep practice drawing graphs over the weekends so that you can will to the curve rule.

For other topics:

1)Probability - remember the concepts:

a. Sample space (s)
eg: The possible outcome of a dice
= {1,2,3,4,5,6}
n(s) = 6

b. P(E) = (Number of favourable outcome for Event E)/(Number of possible outcome)
*refer to textbook pg.357 & math 1

2)Simultaneous Linear Equations

a. Elimination and Sublimation,revise your workbook,worksheet and math 1.

3)Volume and Surface Area

a. Learn all the formulas (cone,cylinder...)

b. Pythagoras theoram & similarity,although this topic is not tested, but they are linked to volume and surface area.

Well,let's go back to graph...

Linear graph:

1)y = mx + c

2)To find the equation of a line,
you have to find m and x

3)m=(y1-y2)/(x1-x2)

4)eg.eqns of the line: y=2x + 3
y=-2.5x + 1.5
y=(-5/2)x + 1/1/2 ( sorry that i cnt type fractions...)

DO NOT write: y= (-2/1/2)x + 1/1/2

5) There's 3 solutions to solve simultaneous linear equations.

1st eqn: 1 set of unique eqns>>>x=?,y=?

2nd eqn:no solution>>>gradient is the same for both lines,they are parallel line(parallel line will never meet)

3rd eqn:infinite solution>>>both eqn are the same & line are overlapping

Quadratic graph:

1) Draw the curve in 5 min only! :(
(I know it's tough but no choice...so practice more during the weekends...)

2)Answer the whole graph qns in max 10 min,you can't spend much time on it.

3)Use a combination of french curve and flexible curve to draw the curve,you are encouraged to buy a french curve.

4)Plot 2 pts at a time.(You are encouraged to use french instead of flexible to plot.)
For the turning pt,use flexible to plot 3 pt at a time.

5)Use the rough edge of the flexible curve & the outerside to draw the curve.

6)Scale is not neeeded if it is given. If the scale is not given, the scale should be written on the top right hand corner of the graph paper.

7)Table might not be necessary if it is given all the values. Also,draw it outside the gridbox or behind the graph paper after drawing the curve.

8) If the question ask "calculate a and b in the table'', no table is needed while drawing the graph unless the qn tell you to do so.

9) Always state the equation of curve on the curve itself.

10) Use dotted lines to answer qns from the graph

11) Use a straight line to indicate the line of symmetry(x=?),no line is needed if the line of symmetry is on the y axis(0,0).

12) When answering the qns for the graph(when y=2,find x...), always use the value on the graph eventhough it may not be accurate,do not use cross algorithm to solve the qns.

13)eg qn.: find the solutions of 4x^2-4x-15=0(workbook worksheet 20 qn 3)

>Do not use cross algorithm
>Since y-axis is 0, use the value of x-intercept from the graph(2 pts on the x-axis)

14)Presentation

eg.coordinates of turning pt=(2,1)>>>must put the brackets!!!
If qns ask for the coordinates of A,B,C in the graph(refer to workbook,worksheet 20 qn 1)

B(2,0)
C(0,-8)

DO NOT write: A=(-4,0)
A is (-4,0)
A=-4,0
A are (-4,0)....
They are all wrong!!!

If the question asks a)find the line of symmetry'

a)x=-1

No need to write x = -1 is the line of symmetry or
line of symmetry = x=-1,wrong presentation.

I will photocopy the notes and distribute it to all of you. I know you have lots of questions in your mind after reading, so you can ask me on Tuesday. I'll go through with you on Tuesday or after the exams, or I'll ask Mr Tan to go through. Please revise your Maths 1, workbook and worksheets as they are extremely IMPORTANT!!! And please practice drawing graphs over the weekends until you have use to it, and remember to buy a french curve for the best of chance.

I know it is very tough for us to strive for this math exam, but still all the best to all... Let us hope that Miss Lim will get well soon and let us thank her for taking the time in passing this message on to us regardless of the circumstances she is facing. She will be back in Term 4 and everything will be fine by that time.

Miss Lim's pointers on how to draw graphs

Yesterday, Miss Lim pointed out the following mistakes when we visited her. So here are the following pointers to take note of.

1)Curve rule

Use the rough part of the curve rule. You will notice there is a smooth edge and a rough edge. Use the rough edge to allow smoother lines.
When using the curve rule, you form the shape with your flexi curve and use the OUTER part of the flexi curve
It is advisable to use a combination of curve rule and the french curve. Use the curve rule for drawing the turning point while using the french curve for the other points. This would speed up your plotting.

I know this may sound confusing. We will try to explain to you all during class.

2)Plotting

Your crosses do not have to be so tiny. Miss Lim says that this may make the marker unable to see the crosses once you have drawn the graph.
Join the points one at a time. There is NO need to form the curve at one shot. For the maximum point, join three crosses together instead. This would make things less tedious.
When the table is given, it is not neccesary to draw it again on your graph paper. It will waste time and may also interfere with your curve.
Do NOT draw the curve at any white portion of the graph paper. You will be penalised for that.

3)Answering

The line of symmetry must be a full straight line.
When they ask you to find the value of y when x is a certain value or vice versa, you would have to show on the where the point is by linking it to the y and x axis with dotted lines. Remember to also write the values of y and x at the side of the y and x axis respectively. Also, do not extend your curve or use the equation to find out the values if it is not in the curve. I think we would also have to explain this in class.
When the graph is given with several points marked out with alphabets like A,B and C. Answer like this C (0,9). Not like this C=(0,9), C is/are (0,9) or C 0,9.

There is also one point to take note for the part where you use linear graphs to find out answer for simulatenous linear equations. The three scenarios are as followed

Unit solution. There is one set of solutions for x and y. This means that you can use the point of intersection to find out the answer for the simultaneous linear equations to find out the only set of solutions for x and y in the simultaneous linear equation.
No solution. This occurs when the lines are parallel when the gradient is the same and do not intersect. This means that you cant solve the simultaneous linear equations.
Infinite solution. This occurs when the equations of both lines are exactly the same, causing them to overlap. This means that there is an infinite number of locations where the lines "intersect" and the number of solutions for x and y is infinity.

Miss Lim says she hopes we will be able to pull through this CA paper. She advises all 2B students to keep practising drawing curves to speed up our drawing time as we are only given 40 minutes for the whole paper.

Is public transport better for the environment?

All over the world, environmentalists are going around screaming at everyone who is driving for causing/contributing to global warming. They suggest using the bicycle or walking to your destination instead. OK, fine. That plan may work for colder countries, but what about the tropics? Would anyone want to cycle or walk to work and end up being bathed in a pool of smelly sweat? No!

They too suggest that we can take public transport to reduce carbon emissions and destroy the Earth and blah blah blah... Again, it might work in third-world countries like India, Bangladesh, and all those countries with lots of terrorists. That plan works for them as many people can fit in their buses (some can be on the roof, some can hang on the sides), like even a 100 people. Although these buses cause a terrible lot of pollution (I don't think they passed any emission checks), it is better than have those 100 Bangladeshis driving their old and rusted "cars". And maybe Malaysia (with those terrible Protons and Peroduas) and Russia (Lada, VAZ... (All crap!)). In Singapore, this plan does not work in saving the environment.

In Singapore, the average age of vehicles on the road are about 3 years. That is one of the lowest age in the whole world. That means that Singapore vehicles are very new and of course that means they have passed the strictest of all emission controls. So much that some of the vehicles give out almost no greenhouse gases. A recent research study done in the UK shown that taking the trains are not as environmentally friendly as driving cars. Even if the maximum number of people is fitted into a train, the greenhouse gases emitted is more than that of every passenger on the train driving a car each. This research has shown that developed cities like Singapore do not need to encourage people to take public transport as almost everyone drives a very new car that produces so little greenhouse gases.

Oh, what about buses, you may ask?! Have you seen that disgusting amount of black smoke from the buses you see everyday and the smell of the air at bus stops. That is really called pollution. I suppose the CO2 emitted from 50 cars put together is significantly less than that of a bus!

Another suggestion from environmentalists are having car pools. The idea of car pools are that more people can fit into 1 car and all go to the same place (like 7 school children going to school in a MPV). This is the only suggestion I agree. But I'm not very sure if that is going to help save the environment that much. You see, a car uses significantly more fuel when it is carrying a heavier load. Six extra school children is about 240KG. 1 Adult + 240KG + Another kid adds up to about 400KG. Plus the weight of the car, the load the car engine has to deal with is about 2 tons. Because it is so heavy, more fuel needs to be fed to the engine to produce more horsepower and torque and so the fuel consumption is higher and the average distance per litre of fuel is reduced. Some cars have a very low loading limit too, maybe about 350KG. If this limit is breached, the car is underpowered to tug along such a heavy load, therefore the driver will feel that the car does not have enough power and would maybe jam the accelerator to the floor for more power. When this is done, the engine struggles to give out its maximum power and therefore there will sometimes be much exhaust gases produced.

If the government really wants to save the environment, they can encourage people to drive more economically and not just stomp on the accelerator as a very light foot can save drivers a lot of money on fuel.

Another good idea of reducing the harmful effects of global warming is to encourage those third-world countries' governments to subsidise the price to purchase a new car so that those disgusting Earth-killing cars can be scrapped and traded for new ones for a very low price. If this is successful, I think global warming might even stop. Vehicle companies like GM should be awarded with a huge lump of money by governments when they successfully invent some new technology for cars that can help save fuel and reduce emissions. Doing so would encourage car manufacturers to research more and try their best to come up with something new to slow down global warming.
